Overview of keloid treatment methods

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

Keloids are scars composed of an overgrowth of tissue. While they seldom present complications to one’s health, keloids do present cosmetic concerns to those who have them. Prominent, raised scars are bound to make someone nervous or unhappy about his or her appearance, especially in the case of someone who’s original intent was to enjoy the esthetic properties of a piercing or tattoo. Several types of keloid treatment may offer relief.

Keloid removal is a tricky process, however. Surgery in particular is risky, as it requires great precision and isn’t extremely successful. Keloids that are cut out in surgery return almost half of the time. Laser surgery yields similar results.

Corticosteroid shots can reduce the size and prominence of a keloid. This method of treatment is not for everyone, however. For some people, these shots are quite painful to endure.

Other options include cryosurgery, which is the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze the keloid off, compression to slough off layers of skin, and the use of silicone sheets. Silicone sheets provide a way to apply pressure to the area, but the material lets the skin breathe, thus the sheets can be worn for an extended period. The sheets smooth out and flatten the keloids.

Some people may seek alternative, homeopathic remedies for keloids. Herbal remedies may soften the skin and decreased the size of the keloid, though these methods tend to lack medical proof. However, for a person seeking relief, every treatment may warrant consideration.

If you are seeking to remove keloids, start treatment as soon after the scar forms as possible. Newer keloids respond better. It is also beneficial to combine therapies – if you elect to have surgery, combine it with compression or injection.
