An overview of extreme body modifications

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

You come into this world with one body. You are born with a certain nose, a certain height, a specific body type. The advantage? The body is a blank slate. You can have a say in how you look. A subculture of people takes this to heightened limits. Their bodies provide the backdrop for extreme body modifications.

Why would someone engage in extreme body modification? Is it merely to be different, to buck trends? For some, that is a part. Tattoos and piercings have been accepted into the mainstream, so some devotees to modifications are on the lookout for new, unique things to do to their bodies. But it is also a way to let your body reflect your personality. For some, modifications beget consciousness-raising experiences.

Extreme modifications include tongue splitting, scarification, branding, implants, and more atypical piercings and tattoos. Scarification involves using sharp instruments or chemicals to create scars on the body. Branding is a type scarification that uses heat to burn a scar. These scars may have religious or ritualistic connotations.

Male genitalia are most often associated with implants and beading. Surgical implants can enhance the size of the testicles, and implanting beads under the skin on the penis can enhance the sexual experience. Transdermal implants exist partially under the skin and partially above. Then there’s tongue splitting, which occurs when the tongue septum is cut, giving the appearance of a forked tongue.

If you are considering having one of these procedures done, discuss it with a medical practitioner. The more extreme the procedure, the more extreme the risks can be, including drastic blood loss and shock. Conferring with a psychologist that you are of sound mind in choosing to get an extreme modification will also help your case in finding a doctor to perform an implant or tongue splitting.
