For a unique but temporary look, try surface piercings

January 19, 2005

For people who are devoted to the art of body modification, there is such a thing as a temporary piercing. There may be a special occasion or a gathering of fellow piercing enthusiasts that inspires a person to get a novelty piercing. These piercings are most often types of surface piercings, piercings where the jewelry enters and exits on the same flat plane of skin surface.

This is not to say that a surface piercing can’t be permanent. You would have to do a lot of research to find an experienced professional who has performed surface body piercings that heal fully. Ask for pictures of well-healed piercings so you can get an idea of his or her work. Make sure they use surface barbells, which are specially designed to cause the least amount of stress possible on a surface body piercing.

But for a temporary, interesting look there are lots of ways to get the piercing done. Because all you need is a flat surface that will accommodate an entry and exit, the piercing can be performed virtually anywhere. You can get a surface body piercing on the back, the nape of the neck, the wrist, and even fingers.

Finger ring piercings are one kind, where the surface bar goes through the underside of the finger to look like a ring. Corset piercing is another. The back is pierced with two columns of rings, which are then laced with ribbon to give the appearance of corset lacing. The Christina is a surface genital piercing on the pubic mound. Eyebrow piercing is considered to be a surface kind, although they are less prone to rejection.

If there’s a special event that warrants an unusual new piercing, consider one of these. Just remember that rejection is quite common and the chance for permanence is low.
