Can babies get pierced ears?

The decision for a child to get her ears pierced is usually up to
the parents until the child reaches a certain age. How long should
you wait till you let your daughter get pierced ears? Are pierced
ear infections more likely to happen at a young age? A parent is
going to have a lot of questions about this subject.
Babies and young children often get their ears pierced to
distinguish their gender. Some parents may simply think it’s cute on
children, and others might prefer to get it done when cleaning and
caring for the piercings are up to them, the adults, rather than the
child. There are cultural reasons behind piercing babies and
toddlers as well.
This is a safe procedure for babies, but it is best to wait until
your infant has had at least two tetanus shots and is at least three
months old. The longer you wait, the more developed the child’s
immune system will be. Also, make sure the earrings are 14 karat
gold or surgical grade stainless steel, as these are the two metals
least likely to irritate the baby’s skin.
You’ll want to visit a piercing professional who is used to
piercing babies. This is okay to do at the mall, but you’ll want to
talk to the person beforehand to discuss their experience in
piercing babies, as it is much harder to get an infant to sit still.
An even better idea is to have the piercing done in a doctor’s
office. Talk to your pediatrician about it if this idea appeals to
you.
Bring a toy or favorite blanket to distract the baby while the
piercer is preparing to pierce her ears. One parent can hold her
while the other talks to her in order to keep her calm.
As long as your baby is pierced in a reputable environment, you
take care to clean her ears several times a day, and she’s had at
least two tetanus shots, there isn’t a problem with getting her ears
pierced.
