Determining if bellybutton piercings are right for you

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

Some of the most common body piercings aside from those done to the ear are bellybutton piercings. They are easy to perform and because these piercings are so popular, it should not be difficult to find an experienced professional to pierce your bellybutton.

Even though a bellybutton piercing is a routine procedure and easy to do, you should still visit a licensed piercing artist who works in a clean, sanitary studio. No one wants an infection from their navel piercing or lasting damage from an inexperienced piercer improperly placing jewelry.

Experienced piercing artists see all kinds of bellybuttons in their line of work. Not every bellybutton is the same, and some can’t accommodate a piercing as well as others. If you don’t have enough space behind the ridge at the top or bottom of your navel for jewelry to sit on, healing could be difficult. Or, if your bellybutton shuts when you sit down, that will also cause problems during the healing process, and it could lead to scarring.

A pre-piercing consultation with your piercing artist will help you determine if your navel can accommodate jewelry. Even if your bellybutton can be pierced without a problem, it’s a great idea to meet with the artist beforehand. If he or she doesn’t think this piercing is right for you, there’s always the option of getting a second opinion. However, if someone is turning down your business, there’s obviously a very good reason for doing so.

One way to determine if a navel piercing is right for you is to look at piercing photo galleries on the web. Tribalectic is one good resource for these pictures. You can look for a navel similar to yours and see how the piercing looks.
