Tongue jewelry should be the highest quality

If there’s one thing you don’t want to mess around with, it’s
putting poor quality tongue jewelry into your new tongue piercing. A
tongue piercing heals relatively quickly, but what most people don’t
realize that while this area may seem to heal quickly, it is also
prone to infection because it is a mucous membrane. This means that
the jewelry is in contact with a part of the body (the tongue) that
is exposed directly to the blood stream and is very sensitive to
pathogens.
When you are looking at tongue piercing jewelry, keep in mind
that you will want something that can withstand saliva and body
fluids. Saliva is designed to break things down in the mouth so that
they body can digest it more easily, so you can imagine how powerful
it is! That’s why jewelry for the tongue should be made from
surgical steel, titanium or other materials that are inert and
non-permeable.
Cheaply plated jewelry with lots of nickel in it is a bad idea
for two reasons. First, the plating will flake off and you can
ingest it or get it imbedded in the piercing, causing an infection.
Second, many people are allergic to nickel, and an allergic reaction
can lead to dangerous swelling around your jewelry and even in your
throat.
You should also look at how well the tongue rings or barbells are
made. Are the screws tightly threaded? If not, the barbell could
come loose and you could swallow or aspirate your jewelry, which
would mean a trip to the emergency room. Does the jewelry have
pieces that are glued on or attached without secure welds? If not,
don’t wear it. In general, jewelry made for the tongue should be
simple and uncluttered but high-quality for your safety.
