Understanding tongue piercing care

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

The mouth is an environment conducive to the growth of germs and bacteria. So when you get a tongue piercing, your aftercare routine is extremely important in preventing problems. Proper tongue piercing care is crucial in avoiding infection.

After you’ve undergone the piercing procedure, your piercing artist will provide you with you information about caring for it. Rinsing with salt water, for instance, is a standard part of aftercare. Do not use Listerine or a similar product – the alcohol in these mouth rinses irritate tongue piercings and delay healing.

Avoiding smoking, contact with bodily fluids, drinking alcohol, and eating spicy foods will all help your pierced tongue heal smoothly. The effects of these behaviors can lead to discomfort around the tongue piercing and once more delay your healing process.

Brushing your teeth and tongue gently and rinsing your mouth between meals will keep food particles from causing problems around your piercing. It will also help reduce the presence of bacteria around your mouth and tongue.

Swelling is normal after you first get your tongue piercing. If you continue to experience swelling, bleeding, pain, and abnormal discharge, see a doctor immediately. A sensation of heat around the tongue is also indicative of problems. It is better to go to the doctor and discover nothing is wrong with the piercing than to wait and be subjected to the dangers of infection. If nothing else, your doctor can present you with more facts about caring for your piercing.
