Getting a vertical hood piercing

January 4, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

The most popular female genital piercing is the vertical hood piercing. It’s much easier to perform, less anatomically specific, and it isn’t as painful as other genital piercings. Vertical hood piercings are ideal for women who want a genital piercing that provides stimulation.

Because vertical hood piercings don’t require a specific amount of skin or a certain anatomy, they are less rare and it is easier to find an experienced artist to perform it. And unlike horizontal hood piercings, vertical clitoral hood piercings are placed so that the jewelry provides direct stimulation to the clitoris. For a minimal amount of pain, you get a lot of pleasure.

The actual piercing process does not touch the clitoris, though because it passes through the hood and rests on the clitoris, some may mistakenly refer to it a clitoris piercing. Though the latter piercing is far rarer, make sure you and your piercing artist are on the same page when it comes to getting this done.

Curved barbells or captive bead rings can be worn in the piercing. With the barbell, the ball on the end would rest right against the clitoris. Ten, twelve, and fourteen are popular gauge sizes for this piercing. Some artists choose to use clamps for the piercing while others prefer to work freehand.

Talking with your piercing artist prior to getting pierced will help you know what to expect – whether you will be pierced with clamps or not, for instance. Some women do report discomfort with clamps, so it is always good to know what to expect going in.

The piercing will heal in four to six weeks, but until that time, take care to keep all body fluids away from it. Enjoy the benefits!
