What should I expect when I go to get my piercing?

January 19, 2005
By:  Bob Whitehead

You want to get a piercing. You love the way it looks and you’ve selected a location that suits your body and personality. But you’re nervous. You find yourself thinking, “I need to know what to expect when I go get my piercing.”

Does this sound familiar? It’s perfectly natural to want to know what to expect before you sit down and let a stranger pierce you. To keep yourself from any surprises in this vein, ask friends with piercings or tattoos where they’ve had them done. Visit the studio beforehand to make sure they have an operating license from the health department and that the studio is affiliated with the Association of Professional Piercers (APP).

While you are checking out the studio to make sure it is clean, that it employs well-apprenticed professionals, and that autoclave sterilization is used, also ask about pricing. You don’t want to get your piercing done and find out your payment method isn’t accepted or that you are short of cash. Most piercings are at least forty dollars. Having enough to tip your piercing artist is always a good idea.

Expect swelling. Depending on the piercing you get, you’ll want to take certain precautions before you go. For instance, if you’re getting a tongue piercing, choose a long weekend so you’ll have time to adjust to the swelling. For a navel piercing, wear a loose top and pants that are low enough to not irritate your belly button.

People handle pain differently. You should anticipate some pain associated with the piercing. It’s not uncommon for some people to get a little woozy after a piercing either. Having a friend drive you will ensure a safe trip home in case you do feel dizzy or lightheaded, and it’s nice to have moral support. Most piercings are fairly quick to perform, but making an appointment is a good idea in case you pick a busy day at the studio to get it done.

Have a bite to eat before you go, and most of all, relax. By visiting the studio before to ask questions and taking precautions depending on your piercing, you’ve done your best to ensure a smooth process.
