Facial piercings becoming a dress code issue

As more people get facial piercings every year, the issue of how
to handle the issue is being directly addressed in the dress codes
of most major corporations. Many companies now specifically state
that facial piercings (as opposed to traditional ear piercings) are
not allowed to be worn during working hours. While some people do
attempt to fight these on discrimination grounds, the companies have
the legal right to enforce these dress codes for any employees.
Some companies, like Ameritech and Sears, have sited safety
issues in the past as one reason for banning facial piercings on
employees. However, other companies are frank about the desire to
present a “clean, conservative, professional” appearance at all
times, and choosing to draw the line at any piercings other than the
ears.
Exceptions to this are facial piercings that are culturally
significant. In most cases, if an Indian woman with a nostril
piercing is hired by a company, she will be permitted to continue to
wear her jewelry because of its cultural significance and importance
to her ethnic identity.
Other companies, especially those that are creatively focused,
have chosen a broader focus by allowing facial piercings that aren’t
“excessive,” which leads the door open to interpretation for
individual managers. This also gives companies the opportunity to
allow dress codes to evolve with the times as facial piercings
become more and more a part of the workplace.
