You put a needle where? Reasons behind female body piercing

December 29, 2004
By:  Bob Whitehead

There are many reasons that women choose to get a female body piercing. While keeping up with or even keeping ahead of trends is certainly part of it, the reasons behind getting female body piercings are as varied as the piercings themselves.

Some people may view genital and nipple piercings as kinky or depraved. Why would any woman choose to modify her body in such a way? For some women, it is a form of feminist expression. Great strides have been made in women’s rights, but there are those who still feel like just a pawn in a world of men. Studies show that exercising personal control over the body is one reason a woman would choose to pierce sexually heightened areas such as the nipples or genitals.

For other women, piercing their most private body parts is a kind of reclamation project. That sad truth is that an all-too-high percentage of women will be the victim of a form of sexual abuse. A woman might choose piercing as a means to reclaim her body as her own or as a form of empowerment.

But there are less heavy reasons as well. A woman who has trouble reaching orgasm may opt for a vertical clitoral hood piercing or other female genital piercing in hopes that the added stimulation will improve her quality of sexual response. The added feelings of sexiness and sensuality are just as beneficial for some women as the actual physical sensation of the jewelry.

Piercing the body of course sends a message. But for many women with a pierced body part, it’s not the same message. Personal reasons, some very intense, lie behind the decision to be pierced.
