“True” belly button ring is a piercing rarity

To wear a belly button ring, all you need is a belly button that
can accommodate the jewelry properly. You may have heard that if you
have an “outie,” or a protruding belly button, it automatically
excludes you from getting a belly button ring, but this isn’t
necessarily true. While it can be more difficult to get one, it
isn’t impossible. It may simply take more care and attention.
The reason it is harder to wear a belly button ring in an outie
is that this is really the only part of the navel that is an actual
remnant of the umbilical cord, and is more prone to scarring. When
you get what is usually called a belly button or navel piercing, you
are actually piercing the rim of stomach flesh around the opening,
not the belly button itself.
An outie belly button ring is more prone to complications
because:
- It can be more difficult to clean because it is harder to turn
the jewelry during cleaning because the skin is thicker and
tougher.
- The belly button ring is more likely to catch on clothing or
other items because it protrudes from the belly.
- The belly button ring will become irritated more often by
rubbing against clothing.
If you do decide you just have to have a belly button ring and
you have an “outie,” discuss the risks and any extra precautions you
should take with your piercer. Only the two of you can decide
whether the risks and the condition of your navel are worth the
investment of time and care for you.
