Body jewellery and body jewelry popular on both sides of the Atlantic

September 03, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

The debate rages on over whether the passion for body jewellery in the past few decades began in the United Kingdom or whether it’s an outgrowth of the American hippy culture of the 1960’s and 1970’s. It’s not likely that the debate will be settled any time soon, since no one has yet even settled the dispute over whether the correct term is “body jewellery” or “body jewelry.”

After the colonies declared their independence over two centuries ago, the English language began to show signs of divisiveness that shows up all over our vocabularies today. Now when you visit BME and other sites, you can tell at a glance whether a personal contribution is from the other side of the pond by how they spell the word jewelry. If they have the double “l” as in body jewellery, then they’re most likely British.

Does it really matter? Probably not, unless you’re looking for a particular site that happens to be on their island and it shows up a bit lower in the rankings because they don’t know how to spell the word and we do (just joking, guys!!!).

So when you’re searching for great body jewelry, keep in mind that you’re also seeking great body jewellery. Both are right (okay, okay, after all, the British invented the English language, right?), and when you surf the web looking for good sites with any kind of information on body jewellery (jewelry), try the word both ways to make sure that you get information from all of the best sources out there, regardless of spelling.
