Body piercings becoming more popular with teenagers
September 03, 2004

In the 1980’s, body piercings were still most common with the
twenty-something crowd with the notable exception of the standard
pierced earrings for girls and the occasional teenage boy who wanted
a single stud in one ear. In fact, this trend remained fairly stable
for a number of years and seemed destined to remain constant since
body piercings required parental consent for anyone under eighteen.
In the mid-1990’s, however, facial piercings such as the nostril
and lip labrets became more and more popular and teenagers developed
interest in these kinds of body modification. At the same time,
parents began to show more leniency toward this kind of
self-expression, perhaps because so many sports and entertainment
stars were wearing a variety of body piercings that once were
considered taboo. With teen idols and athletes wearing tattoos and
piercings, parents were more willing to concede that body piercings
were going “mainstream.”
Belly button rings joined the list of body piercings that were
popularized by Western culture as well, and soon teenage girls
across the country and their mothers were flashing these beauties.
The fact is that in 2003 the average age for first body piercings
that are something other than a standard earlobe piercing is
sixteen. This is evidence that it is not only gaining popularity
with a younger group of people, but becoming more accepted by their
parents as well.
