Choose the right hardware for your nose piercings

February 2, 2005
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Nose piercings are very popular and usually go smoothly when done. Aftercare is very important and the piercer, if he’s any good at all, will go over this with you in detail. But sometimes people get so used to what they prefer in terms of nose jewelry that, when they do a nose piercing, they just put in the nose studs or screws they’ve come to prefer and forget to understand why they’ve chosen them.

For piercings to the nose, you have a few choices. Nose bones or nose studs will have one end with a very small ball that you push through your piercing, where it will then hold the stud in place. If you prefer, you can also get what are called nose screws. These do not have the small ball on the end that you need to push through your pierced nose. Instead the post is either “L” shaped or straight for part of its length, then bent into a curve. These go into the nostril just like their name implies – you screw them into place and the curved end keeps them from falling out.

Your piercer may have a specific reason he chooses one over the other, or it may be only personal preference, but you should always ask. Anything new you can learn about nostril piercings and their care will be helpful. Of course, you should also try both the screws and studs in your nostril piercing when they are fully healed. You may decide based on wearing comfort or relative ease of removal and insertion that you prefer one over the other. It’s up to you – it’s your nose!
