Female piercing needs the right jewelry

August 26, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Whether you have one female piercing or several, you know how important it is to have the right jewelry. It needs to be high quality and the right size and shape in order to both comfortable and attractive. You made a real commitment to have a female piercing done, and you don’t want to ruin things with the wrong jewelry.

Because these piercings are in a particularly sensitive area of the body, you should always make sure you’re getting the most appropriate kind of jewelry for the area.

Below is an example of what are some of the best bets for your female piercing or piercings:

  • For the clitoral hood, choose a captive bead ring from 14 to 10 gauge
  • The clitoris is a very difficult area to pierce, and not everyone can get this style of female piercing. If you can, stick with the basics and with a smaller gauge. Either a captive bead ring or a straight barbell in a 16 or 14 gauge.
  • Inner labia piercings are often done in multiples, and these have a bit more leeway on size. You can do a captive bead ring anywhere from a 14-8 gauge, or a circular barbell from 14-10 gauge. This female piercing is sometimes paired with the outer labia piercing.
  • Outer labia piercings usually take captive bead rings or circular barbells from 12-8 gauge.

Keep in mind that these are guidelines for female piercing, and that there are always questions of comfort and personal preference, but if you are just beginning with this style of piercing, this gives you a good place to start.
