Eyebrow piercing complications can be minimized with proper start-up

August 25, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Eyebrow piercing can sometimes develop complications such as infection or migration that has turned some people off to the possibility of getting this relatively simple piercing done in the past. Actually, the problem is not that an eyebrow piercing is tricky or hard to heal, but that many people don’t know the best way to get one to avoid problems.

When getting an eyebrow piercing, a ring is better than a barbell for the initial piercing because it is easier to turn and clean in order to reduce the chance of infection. It also exerts less pressure against the skin so that there is less chance of migration. Bars tend to migrate faster in a fresh piercing. Of course, once the piercing is healed, you can wear barbells with no problem.

Gauge is also an issue with eyebrow piercing, and anything 1.6mm or larger should be avoided because it will pull down on the facial tissue, pulling the eyebrow out of shape and increasing the possibility that the piercing will tear out. Smaller than 1mm is also not a good idea, since this can cut through skin like wire.

If you follow these simple rules for a new eyebrow piercing and allow it to heal properly for six months, you will then have the freedom to wear captive bead rings, eyebrow barbells, and any number of other types of body jewelry in your eyebrow piercing. The important thing is establishing the piercing properly at the beginning.
