Proper aftercare crucial to successful belly button piercing

January 27, 2005
By:  Lori Wilkerson

Belly button piercings take only a few minutes to get done, but the healing time it takes lasts four to six months. During this time, you must care for your belly button piercing carefully and keep it very clean to prevent infection or migration of the jewelry.

To keep your piercing clean, wash it twice a day while you are in the shower as the last thing you do before you get out. This helps ensure all other cleansers such as shampoo and body wash are thoroughly rinsed away. Before touching your ring, wash your hands and use a cotton swab to remove any crusties from your jewelry. Never use your fingernails to do this. To clean your navel piercing, use a liquid anti-bacterial soap and lather the area, then turn the ring to make sure the soap penetrates the area. Allow this to sit for at least three minutes before rinsing under running water.

Never use a washcloth or sponge to clean a piercing. These harbor bacteria and will re-contaminate the area. After rinsing, dry the area with either a cotton swab or tissue. It is important to make sure your piercing stays dry to prevent infection and the breeding of bacteria.

An occasional salt water soak can help relieve the itching and discomfort of this piercing, but shouldn’t replace cleansing.

While the piercing to your belly button heals, you should wear loose waist bands that don’t hit at the level of your belly button rings. Any rubbing or constriction in this area will only prolong the healing process and possibly cause rejection of the piercing. When you sit down, if the waist band of your jeans is rubbing, loosen it in order to prevent any tugging or pulling.

Caring for your belly piercing properly during the first several months will ensure a clean healing and an attractive look for years to come.
