Navel piercing ranks in top two in piercing popularity

According to most piercing and body art studios in the United
States, navel piercing is the second most common procedure today
after ear lobe piercing. In the seventies and eighties, the cultural
fringe made various types of nose and lip piercings the favorites
after ears, but they never moved into the mainstream culture in the
same way that navel piercing has.
In the late 1980’s, a few supermodels appeared on the runways of
fashion shows sporting belly button rings, and navel piercing
immediately became all the rage in the world of high fashion and on
the club circuit. Navel piercing was considered an accessory more
than a statement, and was quickly embraced by celebrities and music
artists.
Navel piercing quickly moved into the status of “must have” for
young women of all ages, and it passed up the popularity off all
other piercings aside from earlobes within a few years, where it has
stayed since.
The answer to the mainstream popularity of navel piercing has
been the development of unusual and extreme styles of navel rings
for those who want something more unusual. A horizontal piercing
actually enters and exits through the skin below the navel rather
than through the belly button itself, and a “true piercing” is the
placement of a barbell through an “outy” belly button. Some people
also simply have multiple navel rings in a circle around the navel
for a unique look.
It seems obvious that navel piercing will continue to be very
popular, and will continue to change and take on new forms over the
years.
