Can anyone wear a nipple shield?

August 21, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

A nipple shield can look great on men and women who’ve had their nipples pierced, but shopping around for the right kind is important because everyone’s body is different and not every nipple shield will work for every kind of nipple.

For starters, some women have inverted or flat nipples when they come in to get their piercings.  If the piercer determines they can be pierced, the procedure often makes their nipples more prominent, but they still may be relatively small compared to most women’s.  If this is the case for you, keep it in mind when shopping for a nipple shield.  If it is obviously designed for a woman with “pencil eraser” nipples, they won’t work well on your breasts.

Men can usually wear nipple shields just like women can, but will usually need to stick with those that are not as wide and that have no curvature to them because of the different structure of the chest area and muscles.  A more masculine, streamlined style is usually what they are looking for in any case.

Weight is also a consideration.  If you have a small frame or delicate breast tissue that bruises easily, heavy metal isn’t the material you want a nipple shield made from.  Look for lightweight pieces that are designed for all day wear.  If the nipple shield is too heavy and pulls down on a poorly done piercing, you run the risk of pulling or tearing the nipple tissue, so try any new nipple shields out for a few hours at a time before wearing all day.

Yes, just about anyone who has a pierced nipple can wear a nipple shield – but not everyone can wear every kind.  Shop around, try a few and find out what works for you.
