Aftercare for genital piercings

August 07, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

After getting genital piercings, proper care and cleanliness is extremely important, perhaps more so than with any other kind of piercing. This is because it easier for bacteria to collect in the genital area and because, obviously, you can’t keep the area uncovered so that it will be open to the air at all times. It would create too many distractions at work, for one thing. So you have to keep genital piercings covered, but keep them clean and dry at the same time. How?

For the first several weeks after genital piercings, wear loose clothing and underwear of natural, breathable materials that have been washed in gentle detergents without perfumes or fabric softeners. Avoid nylons or anything that would trap moisture next to the skin. If you can, wear panty liners; these can wick any moisture or drainage away.

Until they heal, you must cleanse genital piercings thoroughly each and every time you go to the bathroom with warm water (no soap, as this will cause over drying and prolong healing). For women, the easiest way is with a small squirt bottle, for men, a warm, wet cloth can be used.

Genital piercings should also be cleansed gently twice a day with a gentle antimicrobial soap. Don’t use hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or other products that will dry the skin out and can cause irritation to the delicate tissue of the genitals.

Don’t engage in sexual activity too soon after genital piercing, although this may be tempting. It can take between six and ten weeks for complete healing, and you don’t want to risk it too soon, since vigorous motion can irritate the piercing and reopen the wound if you have sex too soon after genital piercings are done. In the long run, you’ll be glad you waited if you can really enjoy the new sensation because the area is properly healed.
