Genital piercing becoming more common on college campuses

August 04, 2004
By:  Lori Wilkerson

A recent Mayo Clinic study showed that genital piercing is becoming more common with young people on college campuses, moving into the mainstream of educated youth. In 2002, their survey of college students revealed that 1% of males and 2.4% of females had at least one genital piercing. The results were surprising for a procedure that many felt was relatively unusual and limited to individuals heavily into body modification.

The Mayo study revealed that this generation’s twenty-something’s were much more open to a variety of genital piercing procedures, with women particularly interested in getting the procedure done. Clitoral hood piercing was the most common, with labia piercing also very popular.

With the new prevalence in genital piercing, it’s important to know what is and isn’t a good idea for this kind of piercing. Because the skin in this area is extra sensitive, you should always use the highest quality materials to prevent infection. Surgical steel is your best bet, but there are also some high quality 18K gold pieces to consider.

Whatever you do, don’t skimp on the quality of the metal when getting a genital piercing, and avoid crystals and gemstones. These will cause irritation and can trap bacteria. Proper care and use of surgical steel, however, means that these piercings are no more difficult to maintain than most others.

Genital piercing has become popular in particular for the connection to sexual arousal. Many men and women who have never felt completely sexually satisfied report that genital piercing has increased sensitivity and provided incredible sensations that have changed their sex lives for the better!
